Make a Splash—Safely! Summer Pool Safety Tips for Verandah at Valley Ranch

Nothing says summer like relaxing by the pool here at Verandah at Valley Ranch. Whether you’re perfecting your cannonball, lounging on a float, or getting in a few laps, pool time is one of the best perks of the season. And with separate swimming and lap pools in our community, there’s a spot for everyone to cool off, exercise, or just unwind.

Before you grab your sunscreen and dive in, let’s talk about staying safe—because the best pool days are the ones that end with smiles, not stress.

1. Keep Watch—Always

Constant supervision is key. Even if your child is a strong swimmer, accidents can happen fast.

  • Stay distraction-free by putting the phone away and keep your eyes on the water.

  • Always stay within arm’s reach of young kids and weaker swimmers.

2. Fence It In

If you’re visiting friends with a backyard pool, check that there’s a four-sided fence with self-closing, self-latching gates. This helps keep curious little ones out of the pool area when no one’s around. If there is not a fence, be extra cautious, careful, and watchful if you have kids and/or pets. It is extremely easy to wonder or fall into a pool, and weak swimmers are highly at risk.

3. Swim Smarts

Swimming lessons save lives. Enroll kids in lessons when they’re ready, and talk to them about water safety. Even basic survival skills like floating and treading water can make a big difference.

Plus, swim lessons aren't just for kids! Do you or your roommate not know how to swim? There is no reason not to give adult swim lessons a try! Swimming is a lifesaving skill that can be learned at any point in life.

4. Drain Dangers

Pool drains can pose serious hazards.

  • Teach children never to play near drains or suction outlets.

  • Make sure drain covers are in good condition and compliant with safety standards.

5. Learn CPR

In an emergency, every second counts.

  • Take a CPR and first aid class—it’s a skill you’ll be glad to have, even outside the pool.

  • Keep a phone, rescue equipment, and a first aid kit close by whenever you swim.

6. Skip the Breath-Holding Games

Challenge games like who can hold their breath the longest may seem harmless but can quickly turn dangerous. Discourage any activities that involve prolonged breath-holding.

Still want to enjoy the pool fun?

Safer Pool Game Alternatives:

  • Pool noodle races: Grab a pool noodle and see who can paddle across the pool the fastest.

  • Treasure hunt: Toss dive rings or sinking toys and have swimmers retrieve them one by one.

  • Beach ball volleyball: Use a beach ball for a gentler, fun game of volleyball in the water.

  • Water obstacle course: Set up a path using floating toys and have swimmers navigate around them.

  • Target practice: Toss soft balls or sponges into floating hoops or buckets.

  • Follow the leader: Swim in a line and mimic the leader’s movements, like splashing, jumping, twirling, or kicking.

  • Marco Polo (modified): Play with frequent resurfacing and shorter intervals of eyes closed.

  • Float relay: Race while sitting or laying on a pool float to promote balance and coordination instead of underwater challenges.

7. Be Alcohol Aware

Relaxing poolside with a drink might feel like the perfect summer vibe—but save the cocktails for after swimming. Alcohol impairs judgment, coordination, and reaction time for both swimmers and supervising adults.

8. Watch the Weather

Summer storms can roll in without much warning.

  • Never swim during a thunderstorm.

  • Lightning can strike even if the skies don’t look threatening.
